The Cuban Revolution took place over a six-year span from 1953 to 1959. The series of armed rebellions ultimately resulted in the overthrow of the US- backed Cuban government and ushered in a new era of Communist rule. It is often cited as the single most important event of 20th century Latin America. The Cuban Revolution was derived from social unrest and consequently had a major impact on Cuba’s domestic and foreign affairs most notably the installation of a communist government that still rules today and abroad supported communist institutions across the world which in turn resulted in a strained relationship with the United States. Fidel and Raul Castro organized an attack on the Moncado barracks to acquire arms to fuel their revolution. With an army number no more than 150 revolutionaries t he attack was immediately smothered with a majority of the rebels being killed, captured, or executed. The Castro brothers themselves were put on trial. Fidel Castro, being a lawyer, defended himself made lengthy arguments proving that it was his civic duty to do something about the dictatorship of a government that Cuba was living under. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison however his reputation across Cuba grew, which would later prove to be critical to his success. The Castro brothers along with other rebel prisoners were ultimately released in 1955 as a result of external political pressure on Batista’s government to be less oppressive which led to the next stage of the revolution. Upon release, the Castro brothers fled to Mexico where they regrouped with other Cuban exiles and rebels. The movement coined the phrase of the July 26th movement commemorating the date on which the rebels initially launched their attack on Moncado. In 1956 they returned to Cuba and engaged in over 2 years of guerilla warfare, constantly on the run from Batista’s army in the highlands of Cuba.
